They were certain that the new structure of computer use would move computers out of businesses and into society at large. According to Anthes (1993), Companies would be in direct and constant contact with consumers, and businesses and suppliers failing to embrace the new way of doing things would find themselves abandoned by more demanding and increasingly impatient customers. Obviously, they were correct in their predictions. As a result, computer makers, software vendors, cable television operators and telephone companies would rush to form strategic alliances to combine (or integrate) computers with television sets, telephones and handheld electronic devices. Integration was and still is a primary key to the future development of a wide array of data communication processes and applications. Wireless networks would link with traditional networks to offer communications accessible from any place at any time. Commercial information services would proliferate wildly and become a common part of mainstream consciousness, and digital technology would introduce itself in a variety of low-cost portable information devices. In 1993, Anthes commented that "most analysts say that a true mass market for social computing is at least 10 years away" (pp. 78). A more accurate prediction would have been something closer to five rather than ten years.
