advantage. This paper examines the concept of innovative management, which is seen as an effective tool for managing a profitable enterprise. Discussion In his article about innovative management, Mark Jenkins suggests that there are three levels of innovative management: "continuous improvement, distinctive capability and dynamic capability" (Jenkins, 2004, p. 11). Continuous improvement is a byword of all industry today, such that it may not be enough to insure a companys survival and prosperity (Jenkins, 2004, p. 11). However, if a firm has a competitive advantage because of its "distinctive capability" (i.e., it does something nobody else does), then it should be able to acquire and hold its competitive edge, and that in turn depends on its having managers who are able to focus on "those resources which are potentially distinctive and allows them to create advantage in areas that are more difficult for competitors to follow" (Jenkins, 2004, p. 11). However, if its to be useful, a company has to know what its distinctive capability is or "what it could be" if the company were better at it (Crosman, 2006). Amazingly, "[S]ome companies dont have a clue (Crosman, 2006). The third level is dynamic capability, which speaks again to the idea that companies that are not innovative will not do well. Things change constantly, and companies have to be able to reinvent themselves; this is the process Jenkins calls "dynamic capability"; it is the most important of the three levels. They all work together, as weve seen. An example of how a company can survive using dynamic capability is illustrated by Mergentbaler Linotype, "a firm founded in 1886" which has survived three major changes and survived so that it "led the market in 1990" (Tripsas, 1997).
