In his text, Johnson presents the intriguing premise that popular culture has...grown more complex and intellectually challenging" over the course of the last three decades" (Johnson xiii). He bases a great deal of his argument on the beneficial effects of games, including video games, on cognitive development. While Johnson does not try to deny the fact that many video games are violent in nature, he argues that the general antagonism that all video games seem to engender seems to be related to the fact that this new leisure activity differs from the ones it replaced, which includes reading hardback books. The main crux of his argument is that it is not "what youre thinking about when youre playing a game" that constitutes the most relevant issue, but rather the most important issue is "the way youre thinking that matters" (Johnson 40). In other words, Johnson focuses on the fact that video games require players to make decisions, establish priorities and learn new topics of interaction within the context of the particular game. In this regard, Johnson offers a personal anecdote that is quite convincing. He describes how he spent an afternoon teaching his 7-year-old nephew to play "SimCity 2000."
