landing themselves in the adult criminal justice system later. The juvenile justice system needs to be stricter with youth in order to prevent them from becoming adult criminals. Many juveniles sail through the criminal system for many reasons including: too many children in programs, a verdict that the crime was not serious enough to give strict punishment, and case workers who are jaded and do not care about the child they are in charge of. Case workers have a serious challenge in making young people understand why what they did was wrong and what exactly is going to happen if they do not straighten up (Sampson & Themelis, 2009). These juveniles sometimes bounce from program to program, figuring that once they turn 18 everything will go away because theyll be adults. More care should be taken by the judicial system to make sure each juvenile is adequately taking the lessons they should be learning in programs seriously, or else they should go straight to a juvenile detention center. The juvenile court systems handle matters where children are either the victim or the perpetrator of abuse and delinquency. There are other programs devoted to drug abuse, gang members, animal cruelty, and shoplifting. These programs are utilized to give youth another chance instead of throwing them in juvenile detention centers. Many of these programs consist of homes designated by courts to order to house youths who get an opportunity to remain in the custody of the homeowner (Porteous, 2009). Children both in and out of juvenile detention centers have to have counseling, which doesnt occur as often in adult prisons.
