Therefore, it is logical that process of patient intake should be accomplished as efficiently as possible. Gathering accurate information concerning a patient during the intake process is of utmost significance for providing appropriate care and for receiving proper reimbursement for services (Acker and Brown, 2010). Five types of information are considered essential for the processing of new and established patients. These categories are: "Preregistration and scheduling information; Medical history; Patient/guarantor information and insurance information; Assignment of benefits; [and] Acknowledgement of Receipt of Notice of Privacy Practices" (Valerius, et al, 2008, p. 74). The patient intake process generally begins when the patient present at the front desk for a scheduled appointment. Preregistration refers to determining, first of all, if the healthcare requirement that pertain to the patient fall within the parameters of the medical practice; and, secondly, if the scheduled appoint is of the correct length to accomplish the needs of the patient (Valerius, et al, 2008). This can be accomplished over the phone when making the appointment, which improves patient intake efficiency.
