Manuel 11/2010 Please There is no question that affirmative action has been a topic of debate for many years. Many have questioned whether employers should take race, religion and national origin into consideration when deciding which employees to hire. Applying these principals is what is known as affirmative action. Some corporations, whether it is stated or not, use affirmative action to not only help underrepresented groups but also to comply with the equal employment opportunity law. The EEO is a federal law that makes it illegal for employers to discriminate against a job applicant because of his or her race, religion or national origin. Most employers implement an EEO disclaimer at the end of their job applications to show they are abiding by federal law and they will in no way discriminate against a potential applicant or employee based on his or her ethnicity or religion. Many have argued against affirmative action because they believe the best candidate should be hired or the best student should be accepted rather than simply relying on someones race, religion or national origin to try and meet certain quotas or repay them for historical injustices. Many of them believe (ignorant as it may be) that racism does not exist anymore and everyone has the same opportunity as everyone else. Nonetheless, this paper will serve as a recommendation as to why a particular companys board of directors should implement affirmative action policies when considering new hires and potential job applicants.
