Other statistics indicate that those who go on to attempt to lead normal lives generally choose mates who abuse them. As one can see, it is a wound that never heals. This is not a new phenomenon. Shakespeare, himself, indicated the types of psychological wounds that incest can have on a person in his play, Hamlet. Gertrudes character, one must suspect, is full of complexity though many would disagree. And again, Hamlet speaks of incest and how he hates the fact that she has remarried Claudius: "She married-- O most wicked speed: to post With such dexterity to incestious sheets, It is not, nor can it come to good, But break my heart, for I must hold my tongue" (Act 1.2.150-159). She is not just a vacuous queen, concerned with a retention of power, but a fully three-dimensional woman, who has had a background in being treated badly by men, and viewed as an object to them. Even Claudius, whom she aligns herself with, is only using her to gain the throne and to wrestle it from Hamlets grasp. That she has poisoned herself at the end is of little consequence to Claudius. But of notable significance is the continued interaction between Hamlet and Gertrude. There is an unnaturalness between the mother and son. This is particularly driven home in the third Act, scene four when Hamlet confronts his mother in regard to her marriage to Claudius.
