that, in this album, Live "tightened their sound" by adding "crashing crescendos for dramatic effect" (Boldman). Due to tracks such as "I Alone," Boldman feels that this album is more passionate than their previous work and that this factor contributed to the albums enormous success. Examination of the lyrics for "I Alone" reveal that the message of the song can be interpreted on a number of levels; however, elements within the song suggest that its creators are alluding to religious references and the alienation that many people today feel towards the context of orthodox religion. The first stanza states that "Its easier not to be wise/And measure these things by your brains" (I Alone). The first lines indicate that wisdom, that is, to use the human potential for rationality, is a hard path. It is far easier to accept the status quo of society, not to think, not to question, "not to be wise." The narrative voice goes on to say that he, also, "sank into Eden," with the listener, but this leaves one "alone in the church" (I Alone). This suggests that while one can turn to orthodox religion, this ultimately does not help as this leaves the questioner alone. This interpretation is verified by the second stanza, which pictures the listener, the person offering lifes big questions, emotionally stranded. The narrative voice states, "Ill read to you here, save your eyes/Youll need them, your boat is at sea" (I Alone). Again, the song suggests that it is better to refrain from thinking, reasoning, investigating on ones own. The narrator will "read" to us to save our eyes. But this strategy does not help as the listener is cast adrift, with anchor "up" and "swept away," which is a situation in which the "greatest of teachers ...
