with these compounds and their effects on humans. Organic Compounds and Human Health - General The phrase "organic compounds" applies to thousands of structures, many of them harmful. An article entitled "Volatile Organic Compounds Affect Human Health" discussed the potential for harm caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are "a precursor of the particulate matter which, together with ozone, creates smog, a contributor to global warming" (Cole, 2005). The article is an update as of spring, 2005, of a presentation Sheila Cole, a member of the Environmental Health Association of Nova Scotia Advisory Board; gave in 2003. It is available on the Internet at http://www.environmentalhealth.ca/s05orc.html. Cole reveals that "VOCs form a large component of ones total body burden" (Cole, 2005). The VOCs that we are spilling into the atmosphere daily are having a tremendously damaging effect on human health, and Cole argues that we must "cut deeply into the load of toxins" we face daily, or we will pay the price in billions of dollars in healthcare costs (Cole, 2005). Schneeman appeared in 2001, entitled "Carbohydrate, Friend or Foe? Summary of Research Needs." It was published in The Journal of Nutrition, which ...
