such as those which are familiar to most including Ali Baba, Sinbad, and Aladdin. Within these tales, there is significant evidence of the stark contrast in the way women
were perceived at the time of these tales versus the way woman are regarded in modern society. Therefore, exploration of some of the tales reveals these differences, pointing to
significant cultural differences as well as those based upon the lapse of time. For example, in the tale of The
Sweep and the Noble Lady, the woman who beckons the sweep to join her in food and drink is both mysterious and clearly very noble. She is represented here
as having the power in their relationship, while the man obviously has little. And yet, she is surrounded by slave women whose status is little more than nothing.
The slave women are to bathe and dress the strange man but it is the noble woman who will enjoy his company.
However, after a while they carried me into a neat bathroom leading out of the hall, and as I sat there, behold, in came three slave girls,
