While some of Freuds critics contend that his presence in the field of psychology was far from beneficial, arguing how he was "not above manipulating people for his own ends and is some cases literally putting ideas into his patients heads" (Burne, 1994, p. 19), it is difficult to cast such a broad brush of criticism upon the theories that have maintained merit into the twenty-first century, not the least of which includes that of helping psychologists understand traumas related to sexuality. Freud first introduced the Oedipus complex as a way of explaining certain behaviors that occur within and as a result of the familial structure. This concept has been carried forward into contemporary application as it is still utilized in todays treatment methods. By citing examples of "childhood and neurotic mental processes" (Appel, 1995, p. 625), Freud was able to create a link between family relationships and the manner in which they affected the individual later in life. This obvious connection to anthropology led Freuds predecessors to continue applying such a concept even as the family structure continued to change; it became apparent that even though that was the case, there were issues in that particular structure that remained the same. Critics have often noted a significant "need for more intensive study of the interplay of values, parental education, and family process" (Cooper et al, 1998, p. 559).
