Ron Whites "How Computers Work" is an expertly written overview about what is quickly becoming one of the most integral components of our technical lives. White not only covers the basics of computer technology, basics such as the difference between RAM and ROM, he also covers more advanced concepts of computer hardware and function and of software and accessories. If this book has a fault it is that White concentrates almost exclusively on the Windows versions of personal computers. Amusingly, White barely acknowledges the existence of other types of computer operating systems such as those employed by Macintosh. That fault aside, this book is stunning in terms of the information that it provides and the format that it chooses to do so. "How Computers Work" is not a boring black and white textbook on computer function. Instead it is a four-color richly illustrated production that provides the level of detail that is needed by practically any level user. Included are illustrations of memory systems and processors, chipsets and buffers, and practically any other subject that computer users have pondered. Beginners and experts alike will find this book useful. It is mostly geared, however, to the user not to the computer repair technician but even those studying to take up computer repair as an occupation have expressed the opinion that this book was helpful! As is noted above this book is primarily on the Windows operating system. That is unfortunate because there are other systems out there that are worthy of note.
