In 1972, their first album was released in 1972 and its first single, "Take It Easy," won them instant acclaim. Don Felder provided guitar work on their "On the Boarder" album in 1974 and became a permanent member of the band ("Eagles Biography"). "Hotel California," one of the groups signature songs, hit #1 on the Billboard Charts soon after its release. The appeal of "Hotel California" includes its compelling rhythm and chord changes, but also the enigmatic quality of its lyrics, which rely heavily on images associated with California, its culture and history. Don Henley, one of the songs composers, said in an interview with Londons Daily Mail that the song was about the "excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew" ("Hotel California"). In other interviews, Henley has commented that the song is an "interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles," which describes the "dark under belly of the American Dream" ("Hotel California"). As this suggests, throughout the song there are images that portray the decadence and excess of success, which people associate with "making it big" in California. The song opens by picturing a "dark desert highway" and the "Warm smell of colitas" (Felder, et al). "Colitas" is Spanish, which was told to Henley by the Eagles Mexican-American road manager as meaning "Little Buds" ("Hotel California"). In other words, this refers to marijuana and introduces a drug theme within the context of Californias Mexican-influenced culture.
