decay" (Robertson, 174). The assertion that homosexuality is "on the rise" carries with it the implication that it is somehow a "new thing" -- which we know to be untrue. What is new in this latter quarter of the twentieth century is an honest dialogue about how our homosexual brothers and sisters can contribute to the life of the Christian church. It is important to recognize that the Judeo-Christian tradition has been somewhat unique in its prohibition of homosexuality. Abundant documentation shows that homosexuality was practiced freely among many ancient peoples -- notably the Greeks and Romans -- as well as among many primitive cultures, such as the Aranda of central Australia, where it is considered completely normal. In fact, for many Native American tribes, homosexuality was not only condoned by the religious establishment of that culture, but was allowed a special function (Katz, p. 299). But there has been no such role in the Judeo-Christian tradition. The Torah flatly states that for any man to lie with another is an abomination (Leviticus 18:22). It should be noted that the same passage states that to have sex with ones wife during her period is equally abominable, yet we seldom hear anything about that. The apostle Paul, another writer given to tossing very divergent prohibitions under one blanket, states that godless "women exchanged natural relations for unnatural, and [godless] men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error" (Romans 1:26-27). This last passage has often been used by conservative Christians as a basis for their assertion that the epidemic of AIDS is Gods punishment for homosexual sin.
