to the children. In Mexico City, there are approximately 200,000 children who wander and work on the streets (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements 77). Street children are homeless for one reason or another and are either abandoned, orphaned, or just work on the street (United Nations Centre for Human Settlements 76). It is hard to imagine that children just wander around without any resources, but this phenomenon is a reality in Mexico. One individuals observation of this problem is as follows: " One of my first experiences in Mexico was meeting a teenager with Downs Syndrome living alone on a building site, in a half built house, with four stray dogs for company. He slept on a filthy mattress and used an empty tin can as a cup. He was surviving completely on his own, without the help of the local authorities" ("Street Children in Mexico"). Again, there is homelessness everywhere, but the notion that children and teens are on their own, without any help to meet their daily needs, is frightening. Nogales, Mexico is an area where there are many homeless teenagers (Wagner 16). These young people are usually dirty so they are easily spotted, but a social worker sees these homeless teens as indicative of a larger problem (Wagner 16). Wagner explains it this way: " With their economy in shambles, many Mexican families travel to border towns like Nogales to work in U.S.-owned factories, Leal says. Wages are so low that few can afford day care, let alone school, which costs $25 a month. So the kids run loose. Many end up on the streets" (16).
