The following paper examines the history, as well as the development of cosmetic, or plastic, surgery. History of Cosmetic Surgery As mentioned, cosmetic surgery is something that has been traced back to the ancient Egyptians, as well as various Indian cultures it seems (R4md, 2009). It is noted that, "Ancient papyrus texts detail how surgeons even in that primitive age performed reconstructions on lips, noses, and ears using skin grafts cut from folds from the forehead or cheek" (R4md, 2009). Then with the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans there appear to be texts that clearly outline complicated procedures and that there was knowledge of "blood circulation, tissue health, and bone reconstruction" (R4md, 2009). It seems that such practices involving cosmetic surgery were around for a thousand years and then came the time of the Middle Ages when people began to be incredibly superstitious and much of the knowledge possessed was oppressed or ignored (R4md, 2009). Another author provides information about this time period in the following: "Aside from minor advancements, such as a procedure to repair a cleft lip described in early tenth-century literature, the firm scientific foundations found in Greek, Roman, and Byzantine medicine had given way to mysticism. In the thirteenth century, Pope Innocent III went so far as to declare that all surgical procedures were prohibited by Church law" (Seward, 2007). After the Middle Ages there was apparently a renewed interest in scientific thought, and a renewed interest in past knowledge such as that which involved cosmetic surgery.
