Counseling is paramount in the school systems and serves the needs of students in very specific and special ways. Counselors guide students on issues ranging from academics and career goals to personal and psychological matters. Counseling is a profession which has changed dramatically through the years and continues to experience a great deal of change. The changing complexities of todays world has forced school counselors to re-evaluate their roles and responsibilities. Therefore, an understanding of counseling over the course of its history helps us better identify where counseling will go in the future. History of School Counseling School counseling has definitely evolved over the years (Paisley, 2002). What began in the late 19th century as a social reform movement has grown into todays multi-faceted counseling programs (Paisley, 2002). The original intent of counseling was to guide moral and career development but todays counselors do so much more (Paisley, 2002). Furthermore, it is interesting to note that different emphasis has been placed on different aspects of development over the course of time (Paisley, 2002). There have been times when school counseling programs have emphasized social, political, or psychological factors facing schools while at other times school counselors have dedicated their efforts to educational and career choices (Paisley, 2002).
