who experienced visions and events that were somehow different from most of the religious people of their time and their stories still fascinate people today. The following paper examines the two individuals as seen through a text whose pages were faxed to this writer. The paper first examines a letter from Hildegard and discusses her views, and then discusses the views presented in the section on Francis of Assisi. The paper finishes with a comparison and contrast of the two individuals. Hildegard Hildegard was considered to be an "unauthorized mystic" which was something that was not necessarily looked upon as truly religious concerning Biblical teachings (239). But, Hildegard was highly regarded and respected and trusted so she perhaps believed that she had a chance to be openly accepted as such through her visions. In the letter examined she is asking that the church allow her to be acknowledged for her visions, as she seeks validation. In the letter Hildegard first tells Father Bernard that he is truly a great religious leader and example to all. She then asks that he please read her letter and validate, perhaps, her vision and then begins by describing her vision: "Now, father, for the love of God, I seek consolation from you, that I may be assured. More than two years ago, indeed, I saw you in a vision, like a man looking straight into the sun, bold and unafraid. And I wept, because I myself am so timid and fearful. Good and gentle father, I have been placed in your care so that you might reveal to me through our correspondence whether I should speak of these things openly or keep my silence, because I have great anxiety about this vision with respect to how much I should speak ...
