Prior to 1900, few people suffered from heart disease (Heart History, 2005). Prior to the technology introduced in the twentieth century, life was much more strenuous. Most people were involved in manual labor and walked as their principal means of transportation. Furthermore, calorie-rich, fatty foods were not as readily available. The modern combination of a sedentary lifestyle with an unhealthy diet are the factors that have led to this rapid increase in the incidence of CDH. Between 1940 and 1967, the rate of heart disease increased so rapidly that the World Health Organization called it the "worlds most serious epidemic" (Heart History, 2005). Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women (Arnaldo, 2004). According to the American Heart Association, roughly every 29 seconds someone in the US has a CHD-related event, and someone die3s from CHD about once every minute (Arnaldo, 2004). The risk of developing CHD is 49 percent for men after age 40 and 32 percent for women, but as women get older, their rate of CHD incidence also goes up (Arnaldo, 2004). There are many risk factors associated with CHD, some of which are related to family history (genetics), but others are under individual control. For example, high cholesterol level can be controlled with diet, exercise, and, if necessary, medication. Lack of physical activity and obesity, as well as smoking tobacco products have been identified as risk factors for developing CHD (Arnaldo, 2004). Another risk factor is high blood pressure.
