The prevalence of negative health behaviors and unhealthy lifestyle choices are associated with the increase in obesity and associated conditions, such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and hypertension. Lifestyle therapies are pivotal to successful diabetes treatment (Fowler, 2010). A lifestyle that is not healthy, that is, one that is deficit in physical activity and embraces overeating is associated with the majority of cases in regards to type 2 diabetes (Fowler, 2010). Research studies have consistently demonstrated the causal relationship between lifestyle choices causing excessive weight and the risk for hypertension, type 2 diabetes and hyperlipidemia (Fowler, 2010). Fowler (2010) indicates that the significance of lifestyle choices and the risk for developing type 2 diabetes cannot be overstated, as a recent study both men and women with a body mass index (BMI) of 35 kg/m2 experience a risk for developing type 2 diabetes that is 20 times that of people with a normal BMI of 18.5-24.9 kg/m2. Furthermore, research also shows that lifestyle modification, that is, adopting a healthy diet and getting regular exercise, greatly reduces the risk of becoming diabetic among individuals who have either an impaired fasting glucose level or impaired glucose tolerance (Fowler, 2010). Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is defined as a "pathophysiological state that exists between normal glucose homeostasis and frank diabetes mellitus," as indicated by the "level of plasma glucose 2 hours after an oral glucose load" (Pi-Sunyer, 2007, p. 101).
