wrong place at the wrong time. This paper considers two great tragic protagonists, Hamlet and Macbeth, and how their murders affect those around them. Discussion The First Murders: Hamlet is often thought of as the brooding young man who cannot make up his mind, but that is too simple an explanation. He knows within a few moments of the plays opening that his uncle murdered his (Hamlets) father, his hesitation springs not so much from his indecision, as from his knowledge that what he is being asked to do is truly horrific. His uncle is now the king but he is also his uncle-a blood relative-and his mothers second husband. There are many good reasons for his delays, and dismissing it as indecision trivializes the entire work. Unfortunately, his conscience works on him to the point where he cannot let things unfold, but has to take matters into his own hands. Thus, when he goes to see his mother, its to try and persuade her not to continue her relationship with Claudius: "Good night, but go not to my uncles bed-- / ... Refrain [to-] night, / An that shall lend a kind of easiness / To the next abstinence, the next more easy" (III.iv.159,165-166). And its as he tries to persuade her to rethink her marriage that Polonius, who is eavesdropping behind the curtains, makes a noise and winds up on the wrong end of Hamlets sword. That the murder is completely accidental is revealed in Hamlets response to Gertrude: when she asks him "O me, what hast thou done?" he replies, "Nay, I know not, is it the King?" (III.iv.25-26). Clearly, he is hoping that Claudius is dead, but instead he has killed Polonius. Of course, its possible to argue that as Polonius has been hiding around ...
