a time just shortly following the Gilded Age which was known as the Progressive Era. The Gilded Age began around 1878 and lasted until around 1889 while the Progressive Era came about a decade later, in 1900, and ended with WWI. They are two very different times and throughout both of those times in history there was gradual evolution in relationship to politics and the government. The following paper examines the Gilded Age and then examines the Progressive Era. The paper ends with a discussion of the two as it pertains to the obvious evolution taken by the government. Government During the Gilded Age The Gilded Age sounds like it was a pleasant and perhaps prosperous age. The truth, however, is that it was a time of powerful corruption in the government, a powerful sense of selfishness on the part of officials, and also a time of great prosperity for those in control. It is noted that, "Government during this period assumed more authority and power, especially expanding its bureaucratic control and authority. Major areas of expansion of government power included land policy, railroad subsidies, tax/tariff policy, immigration policy, and Indian policy."1 All of these elements, elements that often had begun prior to the Gilded Age, demonstrate a clear sense of evolution towards greed and power. Land policy involved, in one respect, what was known as the Homestead Act which was started in 1862.2 While it was an act that was supposed to help impoverished and struggling people obtain land, and thus a way to survive, it was also something that ultimately led to land control, in the Gilded Age, as it involved speculators.3 This was something that would apparently put land in the hands of many who would make ...
