writings from historians Irenaeus and Tertullian (NIV Study Bible, 1995). John was very prominent in the early Church. There are a couple of speculations about exactly when this Gospel was
written. The historical tradition places the writing in at least 85 AD, perhaps later but the more recent view is that it was written as early as the 50s but
no later than the 70s (NIV Study Bible, 1995). The earlier writing data has some support behind it. For instance, John writes: "Now there is in Jerusalem near the
Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades" (John 5:2). John uses the present tense. Jerusalem was destroyed in 70
AD so that would place the wring prior to that year, before Jerusalems destruction. John was very familiar with Jewish life, which is evident in his writing. He
refers to Messianic speculations in his report of John the Baptists explanation of who he is in the first chapter. He knows Jewish customers, such as the timing of circumcision.
Historically, it can be seen that John knew about the hostilities between the Jews and the Samaritans (see 4:9). He also knew the geography of the area and other
regions, such as Palestine, Bethany and Cana. Some of what John records only an eyewitness could have reported, such as the fragrance from a broken bottle (NIV Study Bible, 1995).
Some scholars speculate about Johns purpose in writing this Gospel but they dont need to engage in any discussion about purpose. John says himself what the purpose is: "But these
are written that you may[a] believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name" (John 20:31). The
