While global pop may be an entity unto itself, it really seems to be a compilation of trends that have surfaced around the world such as fusion, Afropop and ethnopop. The pop in all of these titles of course refers to the fact that they are popular music, or pop, genres. That is, they are light, and generally embraced by the majority of people, and embedded in popular culture. Some pop has also been known as world beat. It is interesting that the literature refers to this type of music as it respects nonwestern genres. In other words, music that emanates from the west is not called world beat. It is not global pop. Rather, it seems that the first world is really something that is an entity unto its own. In some respects then some might call such a genre a politically correct one. Examples are provided from different parts of the world in respect to how the music is labeled. For instance, it is interesting in that in Mexico City, the Latin music had been found under the title World Music where the British and American rock music was quite easily found in the Rock section. This example that is contained in the literature provides some food for thought that goes beyond the music industry. It goes to the way in which different nations are treated and the old paradigm of the first, second, third and fourth worlds. Most have just heard of the third world as people still refer to what is called "developing countries" as the that third world. Actually, the terminology had its start during the cold war era when the capitalist west was the first world, and the communist countries composed the second world, and the odd and end nations comprised the third. ...
