Essentially, genetically altered foods are the result of transgenic agriculture, in which beneficial genes, including those that are pest resistant or genes that enable plants to survive in cold or drought without significant changes to their nutritional qualities, are introduced into existing plant varieties (Bequette, 1998). This kind of genetic engineering has resulted in major changes through the creation of genetic modifications in many different plant varieties. Prior to the onset of studies of genetic engineering, including gene splicing and transgenic agriculture in general, changes in plant characteristics were created through the breeding of specific traits, including traits that make certain plants more resistance to weather changes or that create larger fruit. The creation of hybridization, then, or the creation of specific plant types through cross-breading was a standard in agricultural research for decades. The introduction of experimental procedures in genetic engineering with plants occurred through the improvements made in the study of genetic adaptations. The history of genetic engineering of food is linked both to early genetic testing as well as the history of hybridization of plants and animals.
