Fast forward to the twenty-first century to a world where men and women can casually sleep in the same bed, fully clothed, without fear of even thinking that there is something awry if the circumstances dictate such a scenario. Why? Mores have changed. Today, men and women choose sexual partners and the old taboos of men and women sleeping next to one another are gone, at least for the most part. Males and females in college often live in coed dorms and young singles can just as likely have a roommate of the opposite sex than not. With new lifestyle choices, there is no longer the idea that one is "safe" when sleeping with someone of their own sex anyway. Experimentation into sexuality is prevalent and it is more and more common for young women to try a sexual relationship with other young women. That said, the armed services are not quite as up to date with the ideological shift in society. Instead, men and women are segregated when practical. Still, each branch of the military looks at things in their own way. One study shows that keeping men and women in separate barracks does not cost more as feared ("Military," 1999) and so there is no reason to make them share facilities when they sleep and otherwise engage in personal grooming behaviors. At the same time, while living side by side is not the norm, basic training for the armed services is integrated (1999). However, for the Marines, segregated training still takes place (1999).
