of game theory. The choice of the war in Iraq as the subject may seem obvious, even clich?d, but it is of such importance that it also seems logical
to discuss it. Discussion One of the classic examples of game theory is the "Prisoners Dilemma," and a brief review of it will help clarify the structure so
we can apply it to the international situation. In this classic game, two burglars are captured by the police and questioned separately. The police offer the same deal to each
of them, but dont tell the other about it. The deal is this: If the burglar will cooperate and confess, the one who confesses will go free while his partner
gets five years; if the both remain silent theyll both go to jail for a year on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon; if the both confess, theyll
both get three years (Yen, 1999). The outcome depends on several things: whether they trust each other and to what extent, and how well they know each other. Put in
a matrix, the game looks like this: I keep quiet I snitch You keep quiet We both serve 1 year I go free, you get 5 years You
snitch You go free, I get five years We both serve 3 years Obviously the best solution is for both of them to keep quiet, but as each of
them probably believes the police offered the deal only to him, the temptation will be strong to confess and go free while the other man serves the time (Yen, 1999).
