Gutenberg took the available technology and put it into his invention, moveable type apparatuses were used for printing, but the quality was uncertain. The Gutenberg Printing Press changed all of that. Now we need to ask two questions about this invention. First, what was the technological background in Germany that allowed an invention such as the Gutenberg Printing Press to be invented? And second, how did this particular invention end up changing technology and technological culture in 15th century Germany? Lets first examine Germanys political climate at the time. Less than 300 years prior to Gutenbergs arrival on the scene, Germany (and much of Europe) was under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire, with most of Germanys monarchs at, the time, answerable to the pope in Rome (History of Germany). During the 12th and 13th centuries, however, Germany splintered into large numbers of smaller, independent territories that offered only nominal allegiance to the ruling emperor at the time (History of Germany). All these towns were fiercely competitive against one another - added to that were that the German kings, being responsible to Italy, had little time to deal with the separate rulership within the country (History of Germany). The Hanseatic towns, as they were eventually termed (they eventually became the Hanseatic League), ended up creating a variety of trade routes throughout the region (History of Germany). By the mid-1400s (around the time that Gutenberg perfected his press), the Holy Roman Empire ended papal involvement in the election of a Germany king, making the separate towns of Germany more of a German empire, though Rome still had her hand in the running of the region (History of Germany). ...
