with a woman who was a slave, and takes us through four generations of women, illustrating how they were incredibly different, yet all strong in their pursuit of personal success and strength. In the following paper we examine each woman separately, and then discuss them as a whole. The women are Elisabeth, Suzette, Philomene, and Emily. Elisabeth Elisabeth is the only one of these women who truly experienced slavery, and thus truly understood the meaning of freedom. She was a woman who was not driven by passion, nor a woman who believed that all was possible. She was reserved and intelligent. In an interesting examination of her we examine her reactions when she was allowed to finally possess a last name, something not allowed slaves: "When for the first time they were allowed to create a last name for themselves, it was her mother, Elisabeth, and not Suzette who decided that the name would be Jackson. There was no hidden meaning to the choice, no long association with some significant event or person" (Tademy NA). In her choice of a name we see a great deal about her, for she was a woman who was stable and intelligent, not given to fancy or given to unrealistic dreams. She was a down to earth and rational woman. In regards to the name, "Elisabeth merely said that she liked the clean sound of Jackson, that it didnt sound so French, the way everything along Cane River had her whole life. If she got to choose her own last name, she wanted it simple, a new beginning" (Tademy NA).
