of "nontraditional" students returning to school and completing degrees put on hold in the past have eased conditions for those of us returning for other reasons. The U.S. Department of Education considered anyone born after January 1, 1982 to be "dependent" for aid purposes in 2005-2006 (Funding Your Education, n.d.). Whether that date changes to 1983 for 2006-2007, I am at the brink of the age of independence for financial purposes. I have been living independently of my parents for several years, learning the lessons that have led me to realize I need a college degree to secure my own future. I am and will continue working to meet basic needs, but the salary of one without a degree is not sufficient to fund the education that leads to that degree. The bottom line for me is that I find myself at the juncture of the proverbial rock and hard place, the slippery ground of the middle class where income is sufficient for meeting basic needs but does not stretch further. I am requesting that the Financial Aid office consider me to be independent in keeping with U.S. Department of Education guidelines, considering me as an adult, nontraditional student.
