His writings are his weapon of choice, and in his compelling 1996 murder mystery, Indian Killer, he probes deeply the root causes of the enduring fury and discontent he and his fellow Indians share over their lost identity. Instead of offering an external examination of society as a whole, he elects to conduct an internal exploration by searching for possible clues in a pair of dysfunctional father and son relationships that adds fuel to an already raging fire within. John Smith is a very angry young man, an Indian who desires to inflict the same pain and suffering on the white man that he feels inside. On the surface, he appeared to have everything as the adopted son of a wealthy white couple, Daniel and Olivia Smith. But appearances can often be deceiving. The child had been kidnapped from his mother so that white people could have the son they always wanted. Daniel Smith "worked hard for his family, brought home more than enough money, and loved his wife and son" (Alexie 318). He wanted only the best for his son and tried to do the right thing by him, providing him what he regarded as a good upbringing and proper education, but is often emotionally distant.
