, Inc. by P. Giltman 4/2010 Please At the recent global trade talks in Geneva regarding the
Farm Bill, the United States and European Union offered to cut its farm subsidy ceiling to between $13 billion and $16.4 billion per year. Despite the concession, several nations blamed
the United States for stalling the talks, but the World Trade Organization said all parties are to blame. Nevertheless, no progress has been made and countries are still trying to
negotiate a deal which some argue at this point could be futile. The ultimate goal of the meeting is to open rich-country markets to imports of food from the developing
world. Due to the recent recession in America, global trade is expected to fall several percentage points as well. The US and EU attempted to forge a new global trade
pact over farm tariffs, but nations like China, India and Brazil would not budge. Despite their concession, it appears talks have hit a standstill for the foreseeable future. In exchange
for their concessions, US and EU representatives were hoping the other WTO nations would negotiate and try and work out a deal, but to no avail. In fact, some think
the setback could also jeopardize the 60 years of expansion regarding free trade on a global scale (Miller, 2008). What is ironic is that the summit hit a stalemate over
what some argue is a relatively simple bargain, which is suggesting developing nations like China and India lower their tariffs on industrial goods in exchange for EU and US tariff
