Families are the "seeds of a healthy community" and family systems theory recognizes that families are interactive systems in which the health strengths or issues of any member significantly affect the functiosning and the subsequent health of the family unit as a whole (Ayvazoglu, Oh and Kozub, 2006, p. 235). The concept of "family" that is most often encountered in pediatric nursing, particularly in regards to family centered care (FCC), which is considered to be a crucial component of pediatric nursing (Neal, et al, 2007). While FCC has been research and discussed in pediatric nursing literature, there is no consensus on a meaning of this term; however, definitions of FCC share common features that demonstrate the centrality of the concept of family to pediatric nursing care. These factors are: 1. Respect for the family as a constant in the childs life and a source of expert knowledge about the child. 2. Open, honest collaborative relationships between professionals 481 and families. 3. Respect for diversity. 4. Recognition and support of family strengths and coping mechanisms. 5. Holistic support of the entire family. 6. Parent involvement in care (Neal, et al, 2007, p. 481). As this indicates, family is incorporated into and valued within the realm of pediatric nursing practice as a factor that is crucial to patient outcomes, as patient outcomes for children and adolescents are embedded within the context of their family situation.
