In applied translation it is argued there are two approaches to translation, the faithful or literal translation and the free translation where it is the message that is seen as important rather than the use of the strict equivalent. The attitude that a translation would be undertaken under one of these approaches is an attitude that is slowly fading due to several problems with the approach. It is unlikely that there will aver be a 100% literal of faithful and a 100% free translation, they are both extremes which in reality may dominate rather than be totally representative of the translation method as in any translation there will need to be some degree of latitude in the way the translators finds an equivalent word or meaning. There is also a difficult because these terms may have a general understanding, but they are not technical terms, so as a result they are unable to provide specific rules that translators can refer to in choosing one model or in applying that model. The development of looking at translation as more of a science may be traced to Eugene Nida (2003). The idea put forward by Nada was that of a formal-dynamic equivalence.
