Effects of the drug: If adolescents take anabolic steroids, they will experience prematurely stunted growth, as the drug will prompt "early skeletal maturation and accelerated puberty changes" (NIDA "Anabolic"). Effects can include developing jaundice, high blood pressure, fluid retention, severe acne and, in rare instances, liver and kidney tumors. There are also gender-specific side effects. Males experience "shrinking of the testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, development of breasts, [and] increased risk for prostate cancer" (NIDA "Anabolic"). Females will develop male physical characteristics, such as "facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in or cessation of the menstrual cycle, enlargement of the clitoris and a permanently deepened voice" (NIDA "Anabolic"). Steroid use can also cause mood changes, such as "feelings of depression or irritability" (NIDA "Anabolic"). Depression can occur to a degree that it is life threatening. Common reasons for use: As anabolic steroids are synthetic substances that are similar to the male sex hormone testosterone, their use is prompted by the desire to develop large muscles. Athletes may feel that by taking steroids, they can remain competitive. Doctors prescribe steroids for treating a form of anemia and also to aid men whose bodies do not produce the normal level of testosterone (NIDA "Anabolic"). Slang names: Typically, the full name of the drug is simply shortened to "steroids," but, on the street, steroids may be referred to as "roids or juice" (NIDA "Anabolic").
