Citizen Kane fame produced his version of Othello in the early fifties while Oliver Parker attempted most recently to produce an Othello for the new millennium. What is most interesting is to note that despite the span of years between these movies that they both still manage to speak to the central issues inherent in Shakespeares play. Orson Welles Othello was not shot in continuous filming, but rather was a pet project of Welles. As such, then, bits and pieces of it were filmed over a span of three or four years(Welles 1994). Welles innovations were spurred mainly by a lack of funding. He made changes to several scenes, one of them being the death of Cassio which he filmed in a Turkish bath instead of having Cassio killed in the traditional setting that Shakespeare proscribed. In order to mask this setting change, Welles utilizes multiple shots and close ups of the swordplay. However, Welles lack of funding showed through in other areas that he was not able to mask. For example, the soundtrack is pathetic at best and does not always match the action or dialogue of the characters. The film did go on to win several awards at Cannes, but did not make it at the box office. Welles was a product of his time and though he had tremendous creativity when it came to camera angles and budgets, he was still unable to cross those socially set lines of portrayal of sexuality. Therefore, the issue of male homosexuality is skirted which, in ones opinion, dilutes the true motivation for several of the characters.
