Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. This paper considers the events leading up to Operation Desert Storm, the war itself, and how it compares to the current conflict in Iraq. Run-Up to War The U.S. has had a presence in the Arabian Gulf much longer than most Americans realize; the Navys first mission in the region was in 1879, when Commodore Robert W. Shufeldt arrived on the USS Ticonderoga on a diplomatic mission (Pittman). Since the 1940s, American presence in the Gulf has been constant (Pittman). The region has continued to demonstrate instability: in the 1980s, "Iran and Iraq were at war"; also in that decade the U.S. "participated in Operation Earnest Will, reflagging Kuwaiti tankers under the Stars and Stripes and escorting them into the Gulf" (Pittman). The U.S. presence increased tensions, with some unfortunate results (Pittman). In 1987, an Iraqi aircraft fired on the USS Stark by mistake, killing 37 U.S. service personnel, and the next year, the USS Samuel B. Roberts hit an Iranian mine (Pittman). In retaliation for these losses, the U.S. "destroyed two oil platforms and sank or crippled two frigates and six Iranian gunboats used to attack Gulf shipping" (Pittman). The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August, 1990, was at least in part a result of the tension caused by the U.S. presence in the region; it is also the incident that can be said to have caused the Gulf War (Pittman).
