cells are the progenitor cells of all types of body cells, the undifferentiated forerunners of those cells that eventually will form organs, bone, blood and every other component of the human body (Greenwood and Brownback, 2001). When taken from an embryo - preferably before the 14th day following fertilization - theory holds that embryonic stem cells can be urged to differentiate into any form needed at the time. Thus an individual waiting for an organ transplant will not have to languish until a donor can be found; s/he can have an organ "grown" largely to order. The sticking point in embryonic stem cell research, of course, lies in how the cells are obtained. Abortion clinics have been sources in the past, but it is much more convenient for researchers to create embryos in the lab, destroy them before day 14 and then harvest the cells. The ethical dilemma presented by such action is clear. The purpose here is to discuss the ethical issues surrounding embryonic stem cell research. Researchers Vision Cloning has long been the subject of B-grade science fiction movies, but in the decade of the 1990s it moved into the realm of reality as researchers in the United Kingdom produced a cloned sheep and others at the University of Tennessee cloned several cows. There have been recent reports in the news that a human has been cloned, but those reports as yet are unconfirmed and genetics scientists believe the story to be a hoax. Even so, the technology exists, and most serious scientists have determined to avoid crossing that line. In cancer research and chemotherapy, stem cells are of greatest ...
