We can argue that the movement is both positive in increasing an ethical awareness at the same time. However, we do need to understand that an increased awareness in ethics does not automatically mean that there is an increased standard of corporate ethical behaviour. In a meritocracy the use of talent and ability to create leadership and to denote relevant promotions or demotions. This also has an effect of being seen to undertake the route that may be the best for an organisations, but this is jot always the best route for an individual, or for society in a utilitarian sense. Better qualified individuals may result in an organisation that in run in a more qualified, experienced individuals. However, this does not mean that organisations will be more ethical in practice, but it does mean that they may be more aware of how to appear in the way that the customer perceives their organisation and operation. The real way in which ethics will be apparent in any organisation can be seen in the attitude demonstrated in corporate governance. When we look at these models, we can argue that meritocracy has a place in both of these models. Corporate governance has generally divided into two schools, that of shareholder wealth maximisation (SWM) and that of corporate wealth maximisation (CWM).
