For instance, should a human resources manager who is aware of an employees drug problem tell the CEO, even though the company has a drug treatment program in place and says that such information will be kept confidential? The obvious answer is no, the HR person should keep quiet-except that the person with the drug problem is the company pilot. This is the type of dilemma that leads to questions about ethics. This paper considers ethical issues in management, and how social pressures can influence ethical decisions or create moral dilemmas. Discussion There have been so many scandals in the business community recently, and in particular the financial meltdown, that ethics has become a major concern for everyone involved, and one of the things that must be taken into consideration is the effect of social pressures on ethical management in organizations. This is not a new concept: "Informal conventions and norms about what constitutes appropriate behaviour are a pervasive feature of any economic and social system -- they are intangible assets that facilitate exchange and the effective functioning of organizations" (Private initiatives for corporate responsibility: An analysis, 2001). Thus, the social aspects of business cannot be ignored, though it might seem that social concerns have nothing to do with the business community.
