Ethics come into play in many of the decisions we make in life. This is true of both personal decisions and decisions we might make as a group as a component of our professional or societal responsibilities. Many examples can thus be presented to illustrate the importance of ethics in decision making. Business decision making, for example, might be of particular interest in this endeavor because of the sometimes flagrant violations of ethical codes which occur in that arena. As will be further explored below, the field of accounting stands out as a business arena which by its very nature, is one which allows the possibility of many areas of indiscretions (Ward, 1996). There are, however, many more arenas in which ethical code violations are quite common and for which a common set of ground rules are necessitated. The ground rules which exist for ethical decision making are really quite consistent across fields. The exact nature of these ground rules, however, is actually determined by the profession itself in many instances. Indeed, not only are ethical codes delineated by many professions, they are enforced both within the profession and outside. There are also very general codes of ethics which exist independent of any particular professions code of ethics. These simple psychological codes include such considerations as honesty, fairness, individual rights, each of which forms an important cornerstone in the ground rules of ethical decision making. Interestingly, the American Psychological Association itself has issued a set of ethical codes by which its members are expected to abide.
