PARADISE LOST and RAPE OF THE LOCK: ESSAY 1 The student studying Miltons Paradise Lost and Alexander Popes The Rape of the Lock should realize the functions in these work as a whole are to remind the mortal being that he is only as strong as his own desires; if Man chooses to give into the seedier side of those passions, he will have to pay dearly, not unlike Satan had with his own existence. Without question, it is much easier to be swayed by sin than to be held fast by goodness. Man was just created that way, and it is a constant struggle to escape the daily perseverance of evil. By taking Satans example, however, humanity can judge for itself whether his path was worth the effort, or if working harder at being more morally minded is actually the better choice. The lost lock of hair in Popes The Rape of the Lock can be compared to the fruit in Miltons Paradise Lost. Both items are gone, never to be replaced. Each of the fruit and the lock of hair in and of themselves are of little or no consequence; but it is the meaning behind them that changes many countless lives.
