Long-term care for the elderly, by its very nature, encompasses a variety of concerns. Their physical ailments coupled with
factors such as social isolation make many of the elderly population bitterly unhappy, for example. There are other problems which must be addressed in long-term care as well.
For the elderly, activities which use to be simple become overwhelming. They lose the ability to drive, they are too ill to cook for themselves or even to keep
their homes and their own bodies presentable. Loneliness sets in and eventually the elderly simply give up and resign themselves with their imminent death. For traditional cultures many
of the problems confronting the elderly are typically addressed by the families themselves. They care for their elders needs both out of responsibility and out of love. The
precise nature of this relationship, of course, varies according to culture. The intent of this paper is examine elder care as it occurs among traditional Pacific Islanders.
As is the case for many traditional cultures, traditional Pacific Islander culture holds its elders in great respect. In these cultures younger
