The first part implies rewards for the good and the second part clearly states anyone who does evil will not be rewarded. While the Koran does mention rewards during this life, it is focused more on rewards in the eternal life. There are repeated references to Allah preparing rewards for the person who believes and does good (For example, see Koran: 29.58, 33.29, 33.44, 34.37, 37.105, 77.44). The best reward and most of the rewards are to be given in the eternal world, for example: "And (as for) those who believe and do good, We will certainly give them abode in the high places in gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein; how good the reward of the workers" (Koran, 29.58). This is the reward people need to strive for. The general attitude of Mohammed in terms of earthy rewards is that they are not as important nor are they as many as the rewards Allah will offer if people believe and do good while on earth. Rodrigo Diaz de Bivar, a Castilian hero immortalized in El Cid, is more interested in material rewards here and now. He expected to be rewarded for his bravery and accomplishments. This was the way in the 11th century. Conquering heroes took the spoils of their conquests. The Cid was exiled by King Alphonse and because of this, Cid legally does not have to share whatever spoils he gains with the king.
