It tells a history and connects us to the past, our past. In the following paper we examine two ancient pieces of art. The art pieces discussed are "Statuette of a diskos thrower," ca. 480-460 B.C., Classical Greek, and "Arsinoe II," after 270 B.C.E., Ptolemaic period, Egyptian. The paper discusses each work separately and then compares the two. The paper finishes with a discussion that focuses on this particular writers personal preference. Statuette of a Diskos Thrower "This superlative bronze embodies the highest achievements of the early Classical period. The athlete is about to swing the diskos forward and over his head with his left hand, then transfer it to his right hand, and finally release it with the force of the accumulated momentum" (Metropolitan Museum of Art: Greek and Roman Art). It is a statue which clearly reflects the ideals and the people of the time as it relates to the beauty of youth in the form of man. "The beauty of the statuette lies in the calm and concentrated physiognomy that forms part of a perfectly developed and disciplined body" (Metropolitan Museum of Art: Greek and Roman Art). This particular statue is 9 and 5/8 inches high and is made from bronze, indicating that it is not carved but has been created from a mold that someone sculpted. It is a statue that clearly offers us a great deal of realism in the form of the human body. The bones and the muscles are incredibly well detailed, and the figure is proportionally correct.
