The following paper examines this condition today as many soldiers return from Iraq. The paper examines the issues and the difficulties facing the soldiers and their families, difficulties that present a new kind of battle for the soldiers and families. Returning Home "As the United States nears the two-year mark in its military presence in Iraq still fighting a violent insurgency, it is also coming to grips with one of the products of war at home: a new generation of veterans, some of them scarred in ways seen and unseen" (Welch, 2005). There are obviously military hospitals to deal with physical wounds, but the emotional wounds are far more allusive and often the soldiers will not admit to having problems because they feel it shows them as being weak (Berkowitz 2004). The most common problem is associated with the condition known as "Post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD" which "is an often-debilitating mental condition that can produce a range of unwanted emotional responses to the trauma of combat" (Welch 2005). One of the realities of PTSD is that it can sometimes take as long as several years to actually show signs, but for most it emerges sooner and it often affects families in very direct and damaging ways (Welch 2005). For the most part there are many soldiers who cannot shake off the experiences and what those experiences in war have done to them.
