In evaluating this book, a student inquires as to how well it meets the needs of students using the following paradigms: Content based instruction (CBI) English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). First, an overview of the book is important. How is the material presented? The book is ordered by Units for which there are six units in all. Within each unit are a number of parts and within each of the parts are different titles. For example, Unit 1 is entitled "The Sentence and the Paragraph." The unit contains five parts and the first part has the title "Stimulating Ideas." Under this part are two subheadings, which are "The Paragraph" and "Formatting the Paragraph." The remainder of the book is ordered in similar fashion. Authors describe it this way: "Book 2 of Effective Academic Writing, The Short Essay, introduces students at the intermediate level to three and four paragraph essays. The first unit provides a thorough review of paragraph structure and mechanics to consolidate knowledge before moving on to extended writing" (Savage, Mayer, Shafiei, Liss and Davis vii). Here, it is assumed that the student has cursory knowledge of English and for example, it would not be appropriate for the ESL student. Yet, the CBI model is often geared for people whose first language is not English. How does this book meet the needs of those whose first language is not English? The book is presented in an organized manner.
