is "the loss of a pregnancy without outside intervention before 20 weeks gestation, affects up to 20 percent of recognized pregnancies" (Griebel, et al, 2005, p. 1243). There are different
types of spontaneous abortions, including "threatened abortion, inevitable abortion, ... septic abortion ... and recurrent spontaneous abortion (Griebel, et al, 2005, p. 1243). But no matter what type of abortion
the woman suffers, she still overall suffers a great loss. "Physicians should be aware of psychologic issues that patients and their partners face after completing a spontaneous abortion" (Griebel, et
al, 2005, p. 1243). Women may suffer anxiety and severe depression for "up to one year after spontaneous abortion" (Griebel, et al, 2005, p. 1243). The physicians and other hospital
personnel who were present at the event should be the first to provide support by offering referrals to counselors and others who can help the family deal with "feelings of
guilt, the grief process, and ... [coping] with friends and family" (Griebel, et al, 2005, p. 1243). The research reveals that most women know something is wrong with their baby
before they ever come to the hospital. Once the diagnosis has been made, "[P]atient preferences should be considered when choosing treatment for spontaneous abortion" since evidence suggests that women who
are given a choice in the type of care they receive "have better subsequent mental health than women who are not allowed to choose their therapy (Griebel, et al, 2005,
p. 1243). Even so, this is not to say that they will be able to accept the outcome, and physicians should be aware of the psychological issues that will arise
