1996 that for seven in ten women who had intercourse before the age of fourteen, and six in ten who engaged in the act before the age of fifteen, did have the sexual experiences involuntarily ("Statistics on Teens"). Clearly, from these two pieces of information, early sexual intercourse is likely coerced. In other words, the teenagers themselves did not have the idea. They may have been frightened or were simply affected by peer pressure. It may be that the teenager was raped or that there may have been strong coercion possibly resulting in date rape. There may have been sex taking place at a party where others were involved in convincing the young teenager to go further than she would have liked. Early sexual behavior is not desirable in this society. However, a relatively recent study suggests that the early sexual experience is not as negative as some might think. The following is reported in an issue of Science Daily: "A new study by University of Virginia clinical psychologists has found that teens who have sex at an early age may be less inclined to exhibit delinquent behavior in early adulthood than their peers who waited until they were older to have sex. The study also suggests that early sex may play a role in helping these teens develop better social relationships in early adulthood" ("Early Teen Sex May Not Be A Path To Delinquency, Study Shows"). On some level, the data is conflicting. It suggests that more and more, teenagers are having sex against their will, or at least before they are ready.
