In other words, even if an individual complies with certain rules, he or she isnt necessarily "ethical" if he or she isnt trying to be a morally good person along with it. This is why, many times, ethical people are faced with certain dilemmas that might compromise their principles. In one situation, that is probably all too real in this electronic age, the sale of consumer names (and e-mail addresses) goes on quite frequently. Many times, the information is picked up by cookies and browsers of the Internet, as individuals go around surfing web sites. The question here is; is the individual who gathers those names and sells them necessarily ethical? From a legal standpoint, the person can legitimately do so - there is no law that bans the collection and sale of names to others. But how does the ethical person feel about it, especially if his or her job might be at stake? Does he or she refuse to sell the names to other vendors for profit and risk losing a job? Or does he or she compromise guilt and go ahead and do this? This provides an example of a moral individual who is placed in a slightly unmoral situation. In this regard, Coughlin brings up some interesting points about ethics, particularly as they pertain to business. In his opinion, four main factors shape individual decision-making at work; namely, a companys culture, code of ethics, communication system and compensation structure (Coughlin, 2003).
